    The topic of this part is “Learn about a city that hasdiverse cultures”.

    This section is a travel journal. In the diary, Chinesestudent Li Lan recorded her trip of California and mainly introduced her aday’s trip of San Francisco and what he had seen, heard and felt, from thebeginning interest in the city buildings to later better understanding of thediverse cultures’ influence to all aspects of the city. San Francisco is aplace which shows the mix of American diverse cultures, like the MissionDistrict where many from Mexico or Central America live and Chinatown where manyChinese made a living by shops and restaurants because of the gold rush in the19th century. Therefore, many different cultures have been mixedfrom the 19th century, among of which is the Chinese culture.


    Diary is just a way of recording daily life and has itsown format. The first line is the date, on the left or on the right. The bodyof dairy always is used to record what the writer saw, heard, did and thoughtall day with the first person and past tense. Travel journal recording thewriter’s travel attractions, activities and thoughts has the same format as thediary.

    Concretely, Li Lan recorded her own a day’s travelaccording to the timeline or time order. In the first paragraph, he told thereader her first impression on San Francisco. In the second, third and fourthparagraphs, he respectively described her activities, what he saw and heard andthe next day’s plan in the morning, afternoon and tomorrow evening. In a day’stravel, the writer experienced and gradually understood the diverse culturesare filled with every corner of the city, which is also the theme meaning ofthe text.

    San Francisco is acity in California on the West Coast of the US. It is famous for its Chinatownand its sports teams. Besides, it is one of the wealthiest cities in the US byaverage income, and is often considered one of the best cities in the world tolive in.

    Therefore, we can know thearticle is about Li Lan recorded what she saw, heard, did and felt in her dairyafter visiting San Francisco, US. So it may be a travel journal.

    One culturally diverse placethat I have been to is Harbin, the capital city of Heilongjiang Province. Iwent there last year with my family to see the Ice and Snow Festival, and I wasamazed at how the culture as different to most other Chinese cities. There is abig Russian influence there, with beautiful Russian architecture and lots ofinteresting restaurants. I learnt that Harbin is called “the Oriental Moscow”and that many Russians settled there to help build the railway over 100 yearsago.

    Q2: What are the benefits and challenges of cultural diversity ?

    The benefits: People are ableto experience a wide variety of cultures, making their lives more interesting,and it can deepen the feelings for our national culture, it is also helpful forus to learn about other outstanding culture, which helps improve the ability torespect others.

    The challenges: People may havetrouble communicating or understanding each other, and it may lead todisappearance of some civilizations and even make some people think “Thewestern moon is rounder than his own.”
