    The theme of this part isabout writing about what makes a great scientist. Students are supposed to readthe biographies of scientists Qian Xuesen and Hawking, and on the basis of discourseanalysis, sort out and refine the quality and scientific spirit of scientists,pay attention to and learn the role and function of conjunctions, and finallycomplete a short essay to explain the scientific spirit.


    1. Enable the Ss to getto know the good qualities great scientists share.

    2. Enable the Ss tounderstand the passage well.

    3. Let the Ss learn somewriting skills by scanning and skimming.

    4.To learn from the great scientists and develop the noble spirits .

    1.Guide Ss to learn therole and function of conjunctions such as “however; nevertheless; above all ;besides and so on”

    2.Teach Ss to complete ashort essay to explain the scientific spirit.

    Step1: Introducethe topic by raising a question:

    Before reading , the teacherfirst can raise a question “What makes great scientists?” Students are inspiredto speak up more words to describe the good spirits of a great scientist andthen the teacher can draw a general conclusion about the answer to thequestion.

    Great scientists arecreative, responsible, enthusiasitic, strong-minded, passionate; energetic,determined, devoted, committed, undefeatable, perseverant….

    They are those who made a great contribution/made greatachievements/succeeded in their scientific career/overcome many difficulties.

    Step2: Pre-reading

    Look at the picture, thetitle and, guess what the content of the text is. Then ask students to skim itquickly to see if they are right.

    keys: The text is mainly about the briefintroduction of Qian Xuesen and Stephen Hawking.

    Step 3: Read and answer:

    Answer the questionsbelow using the information from the texts.

    1. Why was Qian called"the father of Chinas aerospace"?

    2. How was Hawkings owntheory proven correct?

    keys:

    1.Because much of thetechnology behind the Shenzhou rockets can also be traced back to Qian’sresearch. Qian earned the name of called "the father of Chinasaerospace”.

    2.Hawking’s own work onthe big bank theory was proven by astronomers with telescopes.

    Step 4: Study the language and structure.

    1. Underline the linkingwords and phrases in the passages, and describe their function.

    2. What is the functionof each paragraph in the passages?

    3. Find Words thatdescribe the personalities of the scientists. How do the stories aboutscientists help illustrate these personalities?

    function: these serve tolink elements in the passage and bring greater cohesion and logical flow to it.

    2. Qian Xuesen:

    Stephen Hawking:

    para2: His claim to fame

    Para 3: characteristicsthat made him great.

    3. Qi Xuesen: a man with great scientific thought and scientific spirit” whowas patriotic and served his homeland with effort, achievement, and devotion; apioneer; didn’t let that discourage him; determined; an outstanding andcreative scientist; deep appreciation fro art.

    Stephen Hawking:

    brilliant; brave; sometimes careless in what he said or did; willing tosay what others were afraid to say; dream what others were afraid to dreamabout; quite determined; willin gto admit his failure.

    In the case of Qian, we see his determination illustrated by his struggles,and how he overcame challenges; his story also shows he was patriotic anddevoted to his career.

    In the case of Hawking, we also see his determination in the case ofdifficulty through the stories told about him.

    Step 5: Writing strategy

    How towrite an article about the seicentific spirits?

    introduction about afamous scientist:

    • 1. age, sex, birth-place, background (概况)

    • 2. appearance, character (外表、性格)

    • 3. education (教育背景)

    • 4. big events in his or her life (in order of time) (经历、生平)

    • 5. evaluation (评价)

    高级句型

    1. 介绍概况:同位语结构、分词结构,使文章简洁。如:

    (1)Abraham Lincoln, theson of a poor family (一个贫苦家庭的儿子), was born in Kentucky on February 12, 1809. [同位语]

    (2)Sun Showier, a worldchampion in diving (一位跳水的世界冠军), is a boy of 14 from Guangdong. [同位语]

    (3)Born in Maryland, USAin 1985(他1985年出生于美国马里兰州), Michael Phelps is a famous swimmer.[分语短语]

    (4)In 2006, having brokenthe world record and got the gold medal (在他打破世界纪录并获得金牌之后), hebecame the idol of the youth.

    2.描写外貌:巧用with短语。如:

    生平事迹:尽量用复合句、并列句、非谓语动词短语和倒装等高级语句。如:

    (1)In his life, he gotmany honours, one of which is the 2005 CCTV Moving China Award (其中包括获得“2005感动中国年度人物”的称号). [定语从句]
