    What’s in a name?教学设计

    The theme of thereading and thinking is about “Learn about a country through its history”.


    The Listening& Speaking & Talking is about the influence of Confucius before Williamvisited Qufu and backpacker Paul talked about his feelings and experience aftervisiting the famous historic sites Pingyao, which shows that the foreigners aretrying to learn about the history and culture about China. So it’s time andalso necessary to learn other country’s histories and cultures, among which isthe UK because we are learning its language---English. Not only can it isnecessary for us to learn the language better, but it can help broaden theinternational horizons of students.

    The reading andthinking part is about the UK. Students can learn its history of developmentand formation according to the time order. Specifically, firstly, the sectionanswers the confusing question why the UK has so many names with the process offormation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and theirbrotherly but independent relationship. Then, use brief words to explain thedifferent invaders had different influences at different period of history,such as the government, town, road, language and food. Next, it introduces thecaption London and its long history. At last, emphasize the importance andsignificance to learn its history and culture before learn the country

    2. Learn to use the reading strategy---reading maps.

    3. Guess the new words in a context.

    4. Use critical thinking and talk aboutopinions and views about the UK.

    Step 6 Post reading---Retell the text

    The United Kingdom, GreatBritain, Britain, England—many people are confused by (1)_____ these differentnames mean. In the 16th century, the nearby country of Wales (2)__________(join) to the Kingdom of England. In the 19 th century, the Kingdomof Ireland was added to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.Finally, the southern part of Ireland (3) ______ (break) away from the UK,which resulted in the full name we have today.
