    A Day in the Clouds教学设计

    The listening and speaking part aims at how to protectand help endangered animals by listening, speaking and talking about the factsand reasons. This lesson analyzes the decreasing clause of Tibetan antelopepopulation and the measures of protecting Tibetan antelopes. So students can beguided to learn to analyse the title and use different reading skills orstrategies, like scanning, skimming and careful reading.


    1.Read quickly toget the main ideas and the purpose of going to Tibetan; read carefully tounderstand what the author see and think.

    2.Understand thesentences of the present continuous passive voice such as “Much is being doneto protect wildlife.” and the inverted sentence “Only when we learn to exist inharmony with nature can we stop being a threat to wildlife and to our planet.”

    3.Enhance theawareness of protecting wildlife.

    4.Cultivate thereading methods according to different materials.

    Watch a video about elephants and whales and then ask:
    Why are they endangered ?
    They are killed/hunted

    Step 2 Before reading--- use visual reading
    Look at the pictures. What do you think thetext is about ?
    It is about Tibetan antelopes.

    1. Answer the following questions.
    Q1:Is it easy for the writer to go on theshort hike? Why ?
    No, it’s difficult. Because the airis thin and we have to rest several times. Then it’s cold because there aresnow-covered mountains disappear into clouds that seem almost close enough totouch.

    Q2: Why did the writer visitTibet ?

    To observe Tibetanantelopes.

    Q3: Where do the Tibetanantelopes live ?

    They live on the plains ofTibet, Xinjiang and Qinghai.

    Q4: What happened to theTibetan antelope in the 1980s and 1990s ?

    They population dropped bymore than 50 percent. Hunters were shooting them to make profits. Theirhabitats were becoming smaller as new roads and railways were built.

    Q5: How to protect them ?

    The government placed themunder national protection.

    Volunteers watched overthem day and night to keep them safe.

    Bridges and gates wereadded to let them move easily and keep them safe from cars and trains.

    Q6: Why did the Chinesegovernment stop the protection program after the population has recovered ?

    Because the threats havenot yet disappeared.
