    Thetheme of the listening section is "how to order food with a foreign friend",which focuses on a trypical Chinese dish category—Xiang cuisine, including thefeatures of the characteristic dishes.After listening, students are supposed toconduct a similar talk on the relevant topic.


    1. To develop students ability to predict listening content with picturesand texts.

    2. Instruct students to refer to the examples and functional items providedin the listening texts and textbooks based on their own knowledge accumulationand life experience.

    3. Instruct Ss to successfully carry out role-based situational dialogues andintroduce Chinese food culture to foreign friends.

    1. Instruct studentsto grasp the key information and important details of the dialogue.

    2. Instruct studentsto conduct a similar talk on the relevant topic.

    Step 1:Leadin

    Match the dishes below to their English names. Then ingroups, discuss what you know about these dishes, including what they containand how they are made.

    Step2: Beforelistening

    In groups, discuss the menu below.

    1.What kind of restaurant is it and what kinds of food areserved?

    It is a Hunan restaurant, and it serves somewhat spicy food.

    2.Which dishes would you recommend to a foreigner? Why?

    The dry pot duck with golden buns and the bridge tofu.Because they are healthy.

    Step3: Whilelistening:Tingting, Anna, and Lisa are at the HunanRestaurant. Listen to their conversation and tick the dishes that they order inthe menu above.

    Because they are a bold people. But many Chinese people think that hot foodhelps them overcome the effects of rainy or wet weather.

    Because bridge tofu has a lighter taste.

    Because Chairman Mao was from Hunan, and this was his favorite food.

    Step 5:Instruct students to make a short presentation to the class about your choice.Use the example and useful phrases below to help them.

    • In groups of three, discuss what types of restaurant you would like totake a foreign visitor to, and why. Then take turns role-playing taking yourforeign guest to the restaurant you have chosen. One of you should act as theforeign guest, one as the Chinese host, and one as the waiter or waitress. Youmay start like this:

    • B: I suggest Mapo tofu.

    • A: Really ? whats that?

    • B: waiter!
