Unit 2 Morals and Virtues-Listening &Speaking&Talking教学设计
The theme of the section is “Talk aboutmoral dilemmas” and “Talk about importance of kindness”.
This part willintroduce what the definition of moral dilemmas is and that different choiceswill lead to different results in a moral dilemma, which aims at guidingstudents to understand the commonality and complexity of moral dilemmas in ourdaily life, reflect our own morals and carry on our excellent traditionalmorals and virtues like friendliness, hope, kindness, generosity, help,honesty, responsibility, courage and so on. So the clue of this unit: facingthe moral dilemmas--- choose--- carry on the good morals and virtues(theimportance of good morals and virtues).
Concretely, Part A is a conversationbetween Jane and Luke about young Lin Qiaozhi, later a famous specialist inwomen and children’s illness in China. In the dialogue, Jane told a real storyabout young Lin Qiaozhi’s choice when facing a moral dilemma. Lin was attendingan entrance exam of medical college when a girl attending the exam next to herwas faint. Save or not ? It’s a moral dilemma. Saving, perhaps she couldn’tfinish her exam and achieve her dream---a doctor who could save more lives. Notsaving violated her principle as a doctor--- heal the wounded, saving thedying. Faced with the dilemma, young Lin Qiaozhi chose to save rather than keepher own benefit---go on her exam. Because of that, Lin was admired by countlessordinary people. So in this part, there are a lot of phrases about feeling andemotions. For example, “Really? Like what ?” “I can’t believe she...” “Whowould do such a thing ?” “Oh, wow!” Part B is a radio show---Rush Hour Show, inwhich the guest Kevin Miller told the origin of “Paying it forward” (means thatif you receive kindness from someone, you don’t try to pay them back. Instead,you go out and show kindness to someone else.)and its story and at last calledon everyone joined the activity.
1. Students can understand definitions of moral dilemmas and carry ongood morals and virtues.
2. Students can judge the speakers’ attitudes and emotions by listeningto what the speakers say, the tone and intonation of the speakers.
3. Students can talk about their opinions about a certain moral dilemmaand the importance of good morals and virtues.
4. Students can learn and understand the rising intonation.

Part A Listeningand Speaking--- Talk about moral dilemmas
Step 1Lead in--Small talk

Step 2 Before-listening
Before you listen, look at the definition and the picture below. Thentell your partner what happened to the boy.

Answers: He had a moral dilemma that he saw an old woman who had fallendown on the street. She needs help getting up, but if he stops to help her, hemight be late for school and get scolded by his teacher.
Step 3 While-listening---Task 1
Listen to theconversation and complete the table to describe the moral dilemma that Jane istalking about.
Situation
The girl is taking the entrance examination for a famous medical university in Beijing. During the exam, the student next to her fainted.
The girl’s choices
She can finish the exam.
or
She can stop and help the girl.
Possible results
She will get into medical university, but the girl might not get the help she needs.
She can put the needs of the other person first, but give up her chance to get into the medical university.
Step 4 While-listening---Task 2
Listen again and decide whether the statements are true(T) or false(F).

Step 5 While-listening ---Task 3
Listen to the conversation carefully andanswer the questions.
1. What did the girl do to help the student ?
2. She carried the student to asafe place and looked after her. Then she went to the hospital with the studentand called her sister.
3. What was the girl’s name? What was she famous for ?
4. Her name was Lin Qiaozhi. Shelater became a great doctor. She was famous for caring for tens of thousands ofwomen and their babies.
5. What did Jane say about the girl’s life?
Her life was full of hard choices, but shedidn’t let them stop her from taking care of people who were in need. Shealways cared for others more than for herself.
Step 6 Post listening ---Speaking
Talk about what you would do if you were ever faced with the same situationas the girl. Then share your thoughts with your group, and explain the reasonsfor your choice.
A:If I were ever in a situation like the one the girl faced, I think Iwould choose to help her and send her to the nearest hospital.
B:Why? Are you sure ?
A:Because I think that for us life is the most important. What about you?
B:I think I would do the same as you.
Step 7 Pronunciation ---Rising intonation
升调和降调是英语中最基本,也是最重要的两种语调。
降调的基本意义是表示肯定、完整、结束等意义,主要用于陈述。
升调的基本意义是表示不肯定、不完整、未结束等意义,主要用于提问。
例如:
1. A:Jean, can you bring me the newspaper?
B:↗Sorry?
Jean用升调说Sorry,其意思是I didn’t hear you.Could you say that again,please?
2. A:Jean, can you bring me the newspaper?
B:↙Sorry.
Jean用降调说Sorry,显然其意思是拒绝帮助或无能为力。
3. A:Mr.Smith thinks we ought to get the money in hand first.
B:↗Who?
A:Mr.Smith.
B用升调说Who,表示听不清对方谈话中的某一部分,要求对方再重复那一部分。
4. A:We’d like to have someone to say a word at the beginning to welcome thegroup.
B:↙Who?
A:We thought that you or Dr.Johnson might doit.
B用降调说Who,其意思是问,对方想让谁在开场时致欢迎词。
